Action Adventure Cinematic Storyboard Online Workshop AUDIT VERSION

Many professional artists from Pixar, Dreamworks, Disney, Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, Marvel, Blizzard, Riot, Lab Zero and various Art Colleges already have taken this workshop as their part of storyboard journey.  And I’m so proud to hear from various students that they have made into the studio or promoted to be a storyboard artist in animation field.

This intensive online workshop audit version provides 8 lecture videos (over 18 hrs 30 min) that I share basic principles and fundamentals of cinematic storyboarding and demonstrate how to apply them into an actual storyboard execution. From story beat breakdown to composition to laying out camera lenses to character acting and more, from basic technical skills to the creative process, I share the important key knowledge of cinematic storyboarding. And I demonstrate to you, step-by-step, how I storyboard.

This workshop is for those of you who are pursuing a storyboard career in the animation industry. Those who want to strengthen basic storyboarding techniques. Those who are art students. Those who want to work in action-adventure shows. Especially those who live far away from the Hollywood animation industry and have struggled to find an opportunity to learn.

You can sign up and unlock one more additional FREE lecture of ‘Perspective and Techniques’ instructed by William Niu (BG Designer from The Legend of Korra & Voltron : Legendary Defender)

Let’s make some action-adventure storyboards!

1. Ah Fai was a chief animator for McDull’s animated features. He’s super cool. Ultimate senpai.

2. Previous post on breakdowns right here

Some thoughts on acceleration and force

I presented this in the order of how I slowly understood the trick of delivering force - first an abstract concept of impact taught by Ah Fai, then a more complicated discovery on the acceleration pattern, last back to a more abstract concept of breakdowns

Like I’ve previously stressed, 2D animation is everything but one single approach. There’s no one rule that rules them all, but interchangeable ideas with math, or physics, or music, etc. There’s no “perfect” animation either, but what is perceived as organic and dynamic. E.g., using the Fibonacci numbers to animate didn’t bring me a perfect animation! On the other hand, a tiny change in the pattern could already make the feeling of force so much more powerful.

Not so much of a tutorial than a personal experience. I hope you find this interesting hahaha

If you’ve ever been curious about what it’s like to storyboard for Regular Show, here’s a very in-depth comic about what it takes to make an episode. I’ve been meaning to make something like this for a while, because I definitely didn’t know the process until I started, and every show is run a little different. I’m very grateful to have such a cool job, and getting to work with and learn from Benton has been awesome.

Also the season 7 finale airs tonight, and it’s a doozy! Be sure to check it out.
